Angelo Reserve
Mendocino County, CA
The Angelo Reserve Science Center was designed by Marcie Gutierrez while working at Siegel and Strain Architects. The structure, a new field research facility for the University of California’s Natural Reserve System, is sited at the edge of a clearing overlooking the Eel River. A continuous portico that provides shade in the summer and protection from rain in the winter links four separate structures each serving different programatic functions. The portico columns and framing were made from Douglas fir logs culled from the Reserve. Building orientation and shading minimize summer heat gain and the buildings are shaped to take maximum advantage of natural ventilation.
